To be totally honest, I actually literally dragged myself to the cinema for this one. I thought I was going to hate it. I had absolutely no desire to see it. I forced myself to sit through the whole screening and watched all my fears come true. I really tried to be open minded though, I swear! But the idea of "The Dictator", "Barot" and "Bruno" made it really hard not to pre-judge this Sacha Baron film. His work has been quite tackishly controversial over the years and I didn't know if I could stomach anymore of his 'childish' comics. Turns out that I was right. There are a few things I have witnessed more horrible than this motion picture.
"Grimsby" is a spy action comedy film directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Sacha Baron Cohen, Phil Johnston, and Peter Baynham. The film narrates the story of two brothers, Norman 'Nabby' Butcher (Sacha Baron) and Sebastian (Mark Strong) who were separated at young age and raised in opposite British class spectrums. Nobby is a loudmouth, football obsessed, kebab eating, father of 9 from a small fishing town in northern England, Grimsby. Sebastian, a complete opposite of his sibling, is a sleek MI6 agent for the British secret service who has just uncovered a sinister plot. Wrongfully accused and on the run, Sebastian now realizes that he needs Nobby's help to save the world and prove his innocence, so they set out globe-trotting James Bond style.
The whole film is a like a gigantic ball of overdone unfunny jokes with maximum gross-out gags. Everything is absolutely exaggerated, and not even in a pleasant manner (it's really just annoying). From Nobby's outrageous love for kebabs (he even owns a kebab machine in his kitchen), to his obsession with football, ridiculous number of children and his plus-sized girlfriend played by Rebel Wilson. Nothing ever comes in moderation. It's like the writers were trying so hard to make sure that we laugh at every scene that comes on screen during the 83 minutes of the film. Even with Nobby's children, it was not enough that there is a whole herd of them; they had to have ridiculous names too such as 'Django Unchained' and 'Skeletor'. Then there is the endless splashings of waste material, explicit shots of giant penises, ruptured anuses and bare testicles; entirely unnecessary and extremely gross. The script also takes cheap shots at Daniel Radcliffe and features an HIV infected Donald Trump.
Rebel Wilson makes great attempt in bringing life to her sexed up character. She plays the loving girlfriend to Nobby. Even though she still maintains her usual vibrant persona, she is more collected in this film (or rather committed) and it was refreshing to watch her get portrayed in a different context. We might have started to think that she is perhaps not capable of any solid/stable commitment at all. Mark Strong on the other hand was a little too stiff in his role. Yes, we get it, he is a secret agent. However, with all the 'gory shenanigans' taking place in the movie, it was unbelievable to see him keep a straight face through it all.
One would easily think that "Grimsby" is a parody of some sort and it's really shocking (and a bit sickening) to know that this is as original as it comes.
