TOP TEN: Best Transgender Movies

Caitlyn Jenner (former Bruce Jenner) literally broke the internet on Monday when she revealed her Vanity Fair magazine cover which was the first look of her after undergoing a sexual transition. The entire planet was up in storm, not because we really did not see it coming…but mostly because we still did not expect it. She did it! She went and got it done!! It was not a media stunt or a prank…she actually turned herself into a woman!!! I personally am not one to get caught up in all sorts of media or tabloid frenzy, but I truly admire Caitlyn for her bravery to take a stand for what she believes in and choose to live her life the way it feels right to her regardless of the majorly judgmental world we live in. Not many would dare to walk that path, and for that I dedicate today’s blog post to Cait. Here is my top ten of the best transgender movies:

Please note that some of these movies do not deal with the issues of transgender directly and are more under the categories of body swap or cross dressing. However, I still feel that they fit the theme.

1. Boys Don't Cry (1999) - Young female-to-male transgender Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank) leaves his hometown under threat when his ex-girlfriend's brother discovers that he's biologically female. Resettling in the small town of Falls City, Nebraska, Brandon falls for Lana (Chloë Sevigny), an aspiring singer, and begins to plan for their future together. But when her ex-convict friends, John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Tom (Brendan Sexton III), learn Brandon's secret, things change very quickly.

2. Ma Vie en Rose (1997) - Seven-year-old Ludovic (Georges Du Fresne) announces to his startled parents, Pierre (Jean-Philippe Écoffey) and Hanna (Michèle Laroque), that he is in fact a girl. His parents first view his newfound taste for girls' clothes and toys as a harmless phase, but as other neighborhood parents grow concerned -- particularly Albert (Daniel Hanssens), Pierre's prudish boss and the father of Jerome (Julien Rivière), the boy Ludovic has decided he wants to marry -- they take steps to "cure" him.

3. Soldier's Girl (1997) - In 1997, new Army recruit Barry Winchell (Troy Garity) is assigned to a base in Tennessee. He quickly befriends the quick-tempered Justin Fisher (Shawn Hatosy), who struggles with drug problems. One night, they venture out to a local bar hosting a drag show. Calpernia Addams (Lee Pace), a transsexual drag queen, fascinates Barry, and they strike up a relationship. As Barry and Calpernia grow closer, Justin becomes bitter and recruits another soldier (Philip Eddolls) to help get revenge.

4. Transamerica (2005) - Right in the midst of important changes in her life, Bree Osborne (Felicity Huffman) learns that she fathered a son, Toby (Kevin Zegers), 17 years ago. Bailing him out of jail in New York, Bree poses as a Christian missionary. She plans to take Toby to his stepfather's house, but when she learns that the stepfather sexually abused the boy, Bree brings her son back to Los Angeles with her. As Toby begins to fall for Bree, she must find a way to reveal who she really is.

5. Tomboy (2011) - Laure is a 10-year-old child whose family moves to a new address in Paris. One day Laure sees a group of boys playing outside the window and goes to play with them, but they disappear quickly. Instead, Laure meets Lisa, a neighborhood girl, and Laure introduces himself as Mikäel. Lisa then introduces Mikäel to the rest of the neighborhood children stating that "he" is the new kid in the apartment complex. A bath scene in the film reveals that Mikäel has a vagina, and a following scene confirms that Mikäel was assigned female at birth as his mom addresses him and his sister as "girls."

6. All About My Mother (1990) - A Greek saying states that only women who have washed their eyes with tears can see clearly. This saying does not hold true for Manuela. The night a car ran over her son Esteban, Manuela cried until her eyes ran completely dry. Far from seeing clearly, the present and the future become mixed up in darkness. She begins looking for his father who has become a transvestite.

7 . Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) - Troubled that he has little access to his children, divorced Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) hatches an elaborate plan. With help from his creative brother Frank (Harvey Fierstein), he dresses as an older British woman and convinces his ex-wife, Miranda (Sally Field), to hire him as a nanny. "Mrs. Doubtfire" wins over the children and helps Daniel become a better parent -- but when both Daniel and his nanny persona must meet different parties at the same restaurant, his secrets may be exposed.

8. White Chicks (2004) - Two FBI agent brothers, Marcus (Marlon Wayans) and Kevin Copeland (Shawn Wayans), accidentally foil a drug bust. As punishment, they are forced to escort a pair of socialites (Maitland Ward, Anne Dudek) to the Hamptons, where they're going to be used as bait for a kidnapper. But when the girls realize the FBI's plan, they refuse to go. Left without options, Marcus and Kevin decide to pose as the sisters, transforming themselves from African-American men into a pair of blonde, white women.

9. The Hot Chick (2002) - Not only is Jessica Spencer (Rachel McAdams) the most popular girl in school; she is also the meanest. But things change for the attractive teen when a freak accident involving a cursed pair of earrings and a chance encounter at a gas station causes her to switch bodies with Clive (Rob Schneider), a sleazy crook. Jessica, in the form of the repulsive Clive, struggles to adjust to this radical alteration and sets out to get her own body back before the upcoming prom.

10. It's A Boy Girl Thing (2006) - Pretty teen girl Nell (Samaire Armstrong) is extremely bookish and can't wait to move on to higher education, while her dim-witted neighbor and classmate, Woody (Kevin Zegers), wants nothing more than to play football. When a class trip to a museum places Nell and Woody under an ancient Incan spell, the two awake the next day to find that they've switched bodies. As they cope with their bizarre situation, Nell and Woody realize that they must discover a way to reverse the spell.
