RED CARPET: Underwhelming Fashion at the BAFTAS 2016

UK's biggest night in film took place on Sunday night at the glamorous Royal Opera House in the heart of London's West End and stars turned out in full force for the 69th EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAS). The lavish event is hailed as one of the biggest nights in award season and celebrities came dressed in all sorts of designer frocks, sequins and lace.

The floor length mermaid gown with an extended tail seemed to be the order of the night. Almost all the ladies came dressed in that style, including Sasha Baron Cohen and E! Entertainment's red carpet reporter. I loved Laura's blue cutout ensemble, however, it reminded me of Julienne Moore's red dress from last year.

We saw a number of pastels that mostly came in shades of baige, cream and white. I am a huge sucker for any kind of lace, so Olga Kurylenko was absolutely one of my favorites and Julienne Moore just looked angelic in that crispy white dress.

There were also some neutrals that vastly came in shades of black. While we are quite used to seeing stars play it safe with the solid black like Kate Winslet did last night, the other stars went beyond the norm by adding det tryail and prints to the ordinary.

Rising star, Dakota Johnson and Emilia Clarke added color to the red carpet with some more luscious red. I did feel that Emilia's dress was a bit too simple at the bottom though and Dakota's ensemble was just ill fitting on her.

The men came all dapper but rather boring in the usual black suit and white shirt. Would have loved to see some grey or navy somewhere in there.

While it was lovely to see all the hot looks from the red carpet, some stars missed the mark completely. Cate Blanchett's dress was coming along just fine until we got to the ostrich part at the bottom. Laura Haddock also joined in and took part in the outrageous feather party and British model Lily Donaldson looked like she had come to the wrong event with this bizarre, see-through ensemble. It was certainly not red carpet worthy and if you are going to show your under wear in public, at least make sure that it is 'some kind of secret'. Bel Powley opted for a rainbow-striped, shimmering Gucci dress which even her pretty doll face couldn't make up for.

Overall, the fashion at the BAFTAS was quite underwhelming. A little more daring and out of the ordinary designs would have been much more as appreciated!
